There's 10 million, million minutes of telephony per year in the US (Scientific American, 1998) [thanks Dan Hon]. Which is roughly 2 hours per person per day, which sounds high. (Roughly 1 million, million words spoken daily, assuming 50 words a minute in conversation, and only voice calls.)
