Now this is a technology conference. So conversations like "who is this for", "what are our values" and "where do we want to go" are always appropriate. conversation is how we figure out the answers.
Technology isn't neutral. There's the Moon landing - for 12 Eagle Scouts - and there's Wikipedia, which is for everyone.
I've been banging on about egalitarianism all morning. The reason why is that about two weeks ago I was on the phone to Mark Pesce discussing this conference, Web Directions. I said what I love about Web Directions it works really hard to mix the speakers and attendees. To get everyone talking.
And Mark said the organisers do this deliberately. That they're good Ozzies, he said, they're egalitarian.
I'd never thought about egalitarianism as a politics before, as an approach to being in the world. It made me think and think and think.
