Engaging Technology was presented at We Love Technology in Huddersfield, 13 July 2006. It’s a ramble through various ideas and projects (tangentially related to design) that I hope influence my thinking. There’s no big argument—this presentation is best thought of as a collection of starting points. It takes a little while to get going, but the first few slides are tapped through fairly quickly.

My talk didn’t actually open with these slides. The screen was blue – the in-between colour of projectors – and so I talked a little about the books I had as a kid: red is the colour of buses and roses; yellow is the colour of daffodils. Blues, I said, is the colour of potential, of something about-to-happen. It’s the colour of the virtual, and of hyperlinks. And when we finally abandon the earth to the rainforests and the lemurs and the cockroaches, and we’re moving all 12 billion of us to go live on Neptune or the moons of Jupiters, the spaceships humanity lifts off in will lift off into skies that are precisely this blue. (I’ve talked about blue before.)

There are 3 ways to make technology engaging.

They are:
