Googlematic*

*Instant Googling Goodness

What?

Googlematic lets you search Google through your Instant Messenging client. Well, maybe not your IM client in particular. But if you used AOL IM or MSN Messenger it would.

I was going to say loads more about the technical stuff here. But I'm not going to. Look further down the page for that.

Also: It's a work in progress. If you have any cool ideas to make it better, I'd love to hear 'em.

* News

Googlematic's not online right now, and won't be in the near future -- its popularity means that most people don't get to use the search, and that's just frustrating for them (there's a limit on searches per hour). But to make up for it, the source for the AIM version is now available. -Matt

How?

* AOL IM

Send a message to the screenname googlematic. Get the top result. Click on it to go there, or type "more" to see a summary of the top five results. Click on one of them, or type a number for more details.

It'll look something like this:

* MSN Messenger

Add a user, choose to add by email address, and type in googlematic@interconnected.org. Send a message and get the top result. Click to go there, or type "more" to see a summary of the top five results. Click on one of the addresses, or type a number for more details.

It'll look something like this:

Who?

Googlematic is by Matt Webb. He has a homepage and an email address: matt@interconnected.org. The bits of it that aren't Google's or the various module authors' are copyright him, 2002. So he owns a small amount of scripting glue. Nice. Matt finds it an interesting novelty to refer to himself in third person. As do I.

What, again, and how?

Oh, it's a collision of all kinds of technologies. In the main:

Basically the entire thing relies on the kindness of Google for opening up their search to be glued into any old interface by any old maniac. I'm extremely grateful to them.

Source

Yes, the source for the AIM version is now available here (get googlematic.tar.gz for the whole thing). Grab it. Play. It's (c) me (Matt Webb) which means you can't pass the script or modules off as your own.

The code is pretty heavily documented. The main thing that twisted my brain was POE which is crazy to begin with but well worth understanding. A very good starting point is A Beginner's Introduction to POE. You'll also need a Google Web APIs license key, and an AIM screenname for your bot. All configuration and usage instructions are at the top of googlematic.pl.

If you have a cool application, I'm happy to point to it here. Ditto any patches or hacks. Just let me know.
